A Few Of The Cool Things I Have Done In The Past

I get involved with all sorts of crazy schemes and ideas occasionally. And sometimes I remember to write them up on my website. Here are a few of the recent  ones for you to take a look at.

The Sexiest Man In Taipei

chris03DSC04179This was just abit of fun to test the idea of "google bombing" by creating an article that would rise to the top of the search engine rankings.

It's pretty simple to do. You just create an article and then go round the internet writing comments and  articles which link back to the one you want to promote. I also asked some of my friends to create links from their own sites, which is a big help. Google counts these links and increases your 'page rank' as a result, which makes you 'more important' to the search engine. The more important you are, the higer up the list you are.

For this one, I used the keywords "the sexiest man in Taipei," and it was a great success. If you go to google and type in that phrase, this page is top of the list!

You can even type "the sexiest man in Taipei" and then press "I'm feeling lucky" to come directly here.

It's a silly example, but it proves that you don't need to pay anything to be number one on google! It gets a lot harder if you want to be number one for a popular phrase. (Searching for the sexiest man in Taipei only turns up 48,100 results. Asking "who should I give all my money to" gets 1,150,000,000 results and it will be a long time before my name is the number one answer to that question.)

Ignite Taipei

On 23 June 2011, Chris spoke at Ignite Taipei, a fun social event with a very challenging format for speeches.

Each speaker gets exactly five mintues, and should show twenty slides during that time. Each slide is shown for exactly fifteen seconds. It's very tough to craft a message so that it fits these limits, and we were amazed at how much work was necessary to get it right.

Take a look, and let us know what you think of the result!

Other speakers included Sascha Pallenberg from Netbook News, Jamie Lin from Appworks Ventures, and MingTang Yang of Ideal Day.

The next Ignite will be on 2 September 2011, and will be all in Chinese. Visit their facebook page for details! http://www.facebook.com/IgniteTapei

World Bank Institute Social Innovation Training

evoke-update"The purpose of school is to prepare young people for the future, but nobody knows what the future will look like."

In 2010, the World Bank launched Urgent Evoke - A Crash Course in Changing the World as a special experiment in online education.

The project was inspired by universities in Africa, which felt that there was a shortage of basic entrepreneur education. Entrepreneurs are not only people who make money, entrepreneurs are people who solve problems and provide people with the things they need. They felt that there was a shortage of programs teaching young people to be problem-solvers: school is all about learning the answers to tests, to solving yesterday's problems, and there needs to be more emphasis on creativity and innovation.

Ministry of Education USTART

In 2009, Claudine entered a competition to win a government grant to start a new business. Funded by the Ministry of Education, the USTART grant enables young people in Taiwan to create their own futures instead of the traditional career path.

Since then, she has gone from strength to strength. She now provides education programs to several schools in Taipei, and organises seminars and conferences on a wide variety of topics. Her company manages our challenges, TEDx events and various classes in different schools and companies.
